Verticut and topdressing greens

Our crews just finished verticutting and topdressing the greens at Sagamore.  This process is usually done 2-3 times per year depending on the weather and health of the greens.

Verticutting, or the process of removing some of the vertical growth that occurs around a grass plant, provides several potential benefits for the turf. It can:

• force the remaining turf to stand up straight and smooth the putting surface for better ball roll;
• increase green speed;
• open the turf canopy to allow in more sunlight;
• makes topdressing easier to work into the soil; and
• allows the plant to put more energy into growing upright shoots instead of lateral shoots.

The greens will take a few days to heal back but should be very playable starting tommorow!!!

Verticutting greens

We are in the process today of verticutting holes #10-#18. This process creates small slits in the greens which help with thatch control and water infiltration. We then topdress and work sand into the small slits. We will be doing this process once a month throughout the season. This is our second time doing this year to date. We will work on holes #1-#9 on Wednesday.
